A frenectomy is a minor oral procedure involving the removal or release of the frenum, the small fold of tissue connecting moveable parts of the mouth. There are two types commonly performed in a dental setting. A lingual frenectomy addresses the tissue connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, a condition often called tongue-tie. A labial frenectomy releases the tissue connecting the upper or lower lip to the gum tissue, which can cause spacing issues between the front teeth or difficulty with lip movement. Our periodontics services in Palm Beach Gardens provide the clinical foundation for soft tissue care, including frenectomy procedures.

According to the National Institutes of Health, ankyloglossia, or tongue-tie, is a congenital condition limiting tongue movement and can interfere with breastfeeding, speech, and oral development, making timely evaluation and treatment important for patients experiencing symptoms. While not every tight frenum requires surgical management, a thorough assessment helps determine the right course of action for each individual.
