Gum grafting, also called soft tissue grafting or gingival grafting, is a surgical procedure that restores lost gum tissue around teeth affected by recession. The procedure involves placing healthy tissue — taken from a donor site in the patient’s own mouth or from a tissue substitute — over the exposed root surfaces to rebuild the gumline and protect the underlying tooth structure. Once the graft integrates with the surrounding tissue, it thickens the gumline, reduces sensitivity, and helps prevent further recession from occurring.
A 2023 systematic review published in PubMed Central confirmed that established soft tissue grafting techniques, including connective tissue grafts and free gingival grafts, produce measurable improvements in root coverage and keratinized tissue width in patients with localized gum recession. These findings support what our periodontist observes clinically: with the right technique and proper case selection, gum grafting delivers predictable, durable results.
